Accumulating quite a bit of ressources necessary to run them. Most of them setting themself up for autostart on system boot. Most of them necessary to launch the repective games. Each one claiming to only need minimal ressources. Today we have launchers from Steam, Bethesta, Ubisoft, EA, Paradox, Wargaming, GoG, and many many more. Several launchers on millions of PCs is a lot of wasted energy and quite a bit of CO2 produced just for advertisment. One launcher on one computer isn't much of an ecological problem. All it needs to do is check the version number of the software, download the newest one and apply it to the installation folder (replacing older files, removing files listed in the update manifest, adding new files). Maintaining a single purpose updater isn't hard or time consuming, unless you want to change the update process completly.
